Judo Class 27: Class is getting easier

Weight: 230.8lbs

So this was an uneventful class, but again I’m still experiencing improved fitness. The ‘uchi komi line’ (where you do 10 partial throws on someone then move to the right and do 10 on them, then move to the right etc until you’ve done everyone) is ABSOLUTELY EXHAUSTING. I can barely stand usually. Tonight, it felt relatively effortless. Since this is exactly the objective I’m trying to achieve with the fitness plan I’ve been following for the past 3-4 weeks, I’m very happy with the results. I am less tired during class, can work harder, and practice more techniques. These will all lead to better Judo.

We worked on Tai-Otoshi again tonight, with Sensei Marci teaching. She is awesome. (All the sensei’s are awesome). This technique just doesn’t seem to go with my body, but that’s OK. There are 67 throws, I don’t have to l like them all!

Tonight we practiced it while moving.

The big thing tonight was practicing the pins (6 pins) and then doing newaza from one of the pins , trying to get out. Again, I performed abysmally. I didn’t break out of any pins, and I couldn’t keep anyone in mine. Being that I am significantly heavier than my opponents and weight is supposed to be an advantage in wrestling, this is a bit irritiating, but I’m just slowly absorbing new techniques. I can tell I am better at this than when I started and I’m improving all the time, so I’m happy.

Sensei Brett asked does everyone remember the 6 pins? I replied Hai Sensei and must have been the loudest or something cause he was like, “alright Allen, demonstrate them...LEFT HANDED since you know them all” as in in front of the whole class. I was a bit surprised and taken off guard by the left handed request as I don’t typically practice them with my weaker hand but no problem. Jumped on him and started pinning. I had only ever seen the 5th and 6th pin once so I was kind of weak on those. I got some pointers to improve them but I think I made a relatively competent display for the class. That is a subtle but excellent thing - to be used by the sensei as a demonstration partner is one of the absolute best ways to learn Judo. I’m not shy or nervous in front of the group and I don’t mind not knowing something. After all, he’s the teacher, if I don’t know it - he didn’t teach me well enough! HAHA.

Either way, yet another outstanding Judo class. My rate of improvement is accelerating - I’m getting better, faster. There is a trend I hope continues.
