Judo: Class 17: Hane Goshi...I'm seeing a pattern

Goshi’s known: 3
Wive’s present on the mat: 2 (mine and sensei anna marie)
So my wife came again! This was great! She is doing fantastic and even though she can’t come often and will therefore progress slowly, she admits it’s a good ass kicking workout and now that she is getting more comfortable with the people, is able to relax and have a good time.
Today we learned Hane Goshi, which is yet another O-goshi variation. This one is like the last one but includes you kicking your leg up as a pendulum.
It’s obvious the sensei is teaching these all together and in an order. This one was much more difficult for me because I don’t get to keep both feet on the ground. Honestly I spent most of the class trying to perfect the standard ‘O-goshi’ we learned last week.
here is a link to a youtube showing O-goshi if you’re curious about what I’m talking about looks like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqLGjRU2kr0
Anyway, another great class. My performance has been improving. My Randori has been improving. I’m definitely getting better at this.
I’m been very motivated by a book I read called Outliers. The point of the book is kind of depressing (that people aren’t great because they work hard, but they get special opportunities that ALLOW them to work hard). But it is very motivating talking about the ’10,000 hour rule’. That basically says it takes about 10k hours of practice to master something. That got me out of the mind set of “do I have talent to do this?” and into the mindset of “I just need to practice the crap out of it until I get it”
So, I’m really trying to get as many hours and as much practice as possible. I no longer believe my shape, age, fitness, talent, etc have as much bearing as brute force practice towards my progress. This is liberating and motivating!
