Up n' at em!

So I woke up before my family this morning with lots of energy. I got to getting and started laundry, dishes, and other chores I'd been putting off. This is directly related to a non-fitness habit I've incorporated and it's working.

For next weeks habits, I'm going to start recording my measurements on Sundays. Scale weight and bodyfat% (per my WiThings scale tweeted to @allenweight) as well as tape measurements of thigh, waist, hips, chest, forearm, bicep and neck. I'll take and post those stats weekly.

Also, I need to do something about my diet! I was thinking of making the habit "all refined carbs" but that is too much too fast. So next habit is to eliminate the 3C's Cookies, Candy, Cake AS SNACKS. This doesn't mean they are totally banned. In very small moderation in a dessert or something will be OK. No more day trips to rite-aid to buy 4 candy bars, or inhale some licorice at work, or that kind of stuff. I know I need to do better, faster, but I'm really trying to incorporate changes only as fast as I can.

Also, as an update my standing desk is a huge success. When I'm busy, I completely forget I'm standing. It is natural for me, very quickly. Only when I'm reviewing a paper copy of something at work or when it's slow and I take a break do I sit down. I estimate my sitting/standing ratio has gone from about 95% sitting to about 25% sitting. That's a much better, much healthier balance. I've mentioned that looking in the mirror, despite being fatter than I usually am, I look slimmer in a lot of ways. My legs are getting more muscular, my endurance is improving. The five flights of stairs up to my cubicle are no big deal and I do that by habit, automatically as well. The only time I ride the elevator is to get to the 12th floor (which has no stairwell entry access), when I'm going DOWN, or when I'm with a group of co-workers all going to the same place and they aren't taking the stairs. All those situations are pretty rare.

My habits are WORKING. Now with some of my new food related habits, I think I'll start seeing dramatic changes. I'm going to also try to be better prepared with foods and vegetables especially so I'm less tempted by stuff.

Future habits will be to nix eating out, as there are SO MANY RESTAURANTS around my work within walking distance, that whatever I bring from home doesn't stand a chance of sounding good compared to all the yummy foods. The negative to that is of course my waistline and my wallet. One needs slimming and one needs fattening. Eating out does it backwards!

Bus a bust

So, I love riding the bus. I like my new bus habit. I wish I could continue doing it. Sadly, with the schedule to my suburb, it just isn't compatible with Judo and family. To really stick with it I'd have to arrive home at 10:30pm two nights a week, not drop my daughter off at school and get home later. I gave it a try, but it won't work. If I lived in a better served area, it could.

I'll revert back to driving. Sticking with the stairs though! The bus habit had a great side benefit of assuring I didn't sleep in and got to work early. My new habit is to always arrive at the same time every day, 7:30am except on the days I drop my daughter off at school.

This is iterative improvement.

Food today bad

So the food for today, January 9th, 2013, is going to be bad. And it was bad yesterday. That's a bad trend. I'm still OK with it, because I haven't really touched any healthy food habits yet. I DID (and have been) follow through on logging my food though, and as expected it is leading me to make better choices than I would have otherwise.

Yesterday at my childs school function, there were all sorts of unhealthy snacks and ice cream bars and everything. Because I knew I would have to log it on this website, I limited myself to one bite. I've also kept to non-caloric drinks (per a previous habit) for the same reason.

So the rationale behind the logging and posting of my intake is working, which is great. Yes, I still need to improve what that intake actually is but the victory is in sticking to my agreed upon habits of which I can only assimilate a few at a time, and that that habit has improved the intake over what it would have been.

With a bit more food preparation (which is why today will be less than optimal) and planning (future habits?) I should be rock and rolling!

/update: loud talking inappropriate to girlfriend on bus guy is back! He's a habitual offender! How rude! He's doing it right behind the guy that threatened him last time! Hopefully there's an assault.
